A musician performs in a litter bin on a street near Cambridge University in England. I took the photo in June 2010 at the peak of the financial crisis. The man played great. And he had apparently found the way to survive the tough times.

A couple of months ago I was one of the anxious college applicants for the class of 2015. For joy or for grief the days of these strong emotions (i.e. nervous anticipation) are now all over. I doubt I could be happier to know that this September I am going to study at a cutting edge world university and that now I can proudly call myself a wildcat from the team of Northwestern University.
One of the other institutions to which I applied was USC’ School of Cinematic Arts. I have made the decision to reveal the visual sample which I submitted hoping that this might ease and inspire you while preparing yours. This photo story tells the story of men and women, birth and death, monotony and turns. It simply tells the story of life. I called it Leaves of Grass, alluding to the great poetry collection by Walt Whitman. I will appreciate any comments. :)

About 15 thousand viewers attended the screenings of more than 500 reels and 45 shows.  Geoff from the Portobello team wrote, “Most of the films we receive are independently made by individuals or small groups of filmmakers on micro budgets. If there was a single trend this year, it was that many more independent films than in previous years seemed to seek the mainstream and work within fairly conservative genres and established conventions. This is not surprising but a little disappointing. The whole point is to try and do something different. The independent films that were most successful at the Festival retained the individuality of the filmmaker and couldn’t easily be slotted into a TV schedule. The films that made our shortlist and became prizewinners all had that sense of uniqueness about them.”

Portobello Film Festival  has been dubbed ‘the wild side of Brit Film’ (Metro), ‘this pioneering film festival’ (Evening Standard), ‘the biggest celebration of independent film in Europe’ (The Independent) and ‘London’s biggest filmic free-for-all’ (Time Out). Many directors (such as Shane Meadows and Guy Ritchie) have gained recognition in the industry after debuting at the Portobello Film Festival first.

Over the last couple of days Clouds Fly West has been makingthe headlines of the biggest national news agencies in Bulgaria.

Hundreds (and still growing at this vey moment) of websites are writing articles at this very moment about the success of my latest film reel; the biggest and most influential TV and radio stations are broadcasting tonight; the leading newspapers are about to publish the story in tomorrow’s issues.

Just to give you a general idea, bTV which is the TV channel with the biggest market share (founded by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation), is broadcasting my interview tonight in between those of Elton John and George Bucay (already feeling shivers out of excitement through my body).

I am at the ready to get all publications and recodrings. Look forward to video upload of the entire news coverage.

Four days and nights (29th April – 2nd May to be precise) continued the NFFTY international film festival for talented youth in Seattle, USA. Films coming from 33 US states and 16 countries, including Bulgaria for first time ever, were presented as part of the official selection. NFFTY (pronounced ‘nifty’ ;-) ) ranks first in the States as the biggest and most influential film festival for youth with more than 8000 viewers attending in 2010. A total of 23 film screenings, 4 filmmaking panels/workshops, a speed networking event, and several parties took place this year. Kathy Reichgerdt, Board Treasurer of the event, proudly states – “Once someone comes to NFFTY, they are totally blown away by the quality of the films and the enthusiasm and passion of their stories. I personally have had several people come up to me and say that NFFTY is one of the best organized film festivals they have ever attended, and  they were industry people from Los Angeles. I have yet to meet someone who thinks the other way.”

My film “Clouds Fly West” became the first Bulgarian short to ever make it to the official selection of the festival. The packed to capacity with almost 300 viewers EMP|SFM theatre is where it was screened.  ”Clouds Fly West” was presented as part of the NFFTY Earth program which highlights 10 films dedicated to issues such as environment conservation, social justice, human trafficking or international peace.

One can in no way deny that getting a prize at NFFTY is an arduous achievement, at the very least considering that this year three of the films shown are winners of the US State Department Connect Contest. Nevertheless, it was exactly my that snatched the Audience Award. At the closing ceremony on 2nd May “Clouds Fly West” was official announced to be the audience winner at NFFTY 2010 Earth. I would like to deeply thank you for that recognition. This is what tells me that all of my efforts for more than a year and a half while working the movie were not in vain. The International Film Festival in Newport Beach, CA was stately closed last night. And while awaiting feedback about the performance of the Bulgarian film ‘Clouds Fly West’ get a 60 seconds load of what was captured by the maaaany camera lenses there ;-)
